Can you automatically detect missing sheets on saddle stitchers and perfect binders? Can an incorrect order of the folding sheets in the book block/brochure be systematically ruled out? The answer to both questions is yes. Our retrofitting of a “PPL Eagle” camera system for Nunnenmann GmbH shows how this works in practice.

The project, a joint effort between partners SID and Post Print Leipzig GmbH (PPL), aims to develop a machine that uses cotton thread to bind folded pages, replacing the galvanized wire used for saddle stitching. The binding will be finished with a knot created by the machine. This process is known as knotted thread stitching.

Smyth’s 2-in-1 principle doubles the magazine capacity for signatures on the same footprint by strategically dividing the feed units. Combined with the PPL camera system, the sheet sequence is automatically monitored via image or barcode comparison to technically eliminate production errors.
