With over seventy years of experience, Müller Martini is one of the most trusted manufacturers in the world for print finishing machines. The brand stands for quality and durability. When augmented by recent technological innovations, like our camera systems, even older models, such as the Presto E90 saddle stitcher from 2011 shown here, still meet all the requirements of a modern, high-performance machine. Our client, Nunnemann GmbH in Herxheim near Landau (Palatinate) is a good example; not long ago we retrofitted a camera for them. At Nunnemann GmbH the printer uses the barcode function, ensuring the correct sequence of sheets, and thus reducing the number of errors, while maximizing the machine’s capacity. The camera system also makes their production practices more sustainable by preserving resources, such as paper.
The barcode function guarantees the correct order when collating
Nunnemann GmbH’s saddle stitcher Presto E90 has four double feeders and cover feeders. We’ve equipped all their signature feeders with a camera. At Nunnemann GmbH they decided not to have a camera installed on the cover feeder. This is, however, technically possible. If in the future they need it for a project, we could also retrofit their cover feeder with a camera.
This is how our camera system works on the Müller Martini Presto E90
First, Code 128 barcodes are printed on the folding sheets. The system can, however, also handle other types of barcodes. Then the operator sets up the machine according to the desired order and feeds the feeder with the signatures in the correct order. To start production, the operator presses the button “program the cameras” on the camera system’s touch display. After production starts and the first products are created, the system learns the barcodes and ensures the correct sequence for the rest of the run.
In the Müller-Martini saddle stitchers the camera’s position is defined in collaboration with the customer, which means that the camera can include every format. It’s no longer necessary to move the camera. Before production begins, the operators determine a fixed position for the barcode on the sheets.
Müller Martini Presto E90 + PPL Camera System = useful new functions
You can expand the Müller-Martini saddle stitcher’s functionality by connecting it to our camera system. At Nunnemann GmbH the faulty products are ejected after the stitching machine. To avoid expensive downtime, the machine doesn’t stop after one or two consecutive errors. It simply ejects the unstapled sheets. It only stops if there are three consecutive errors.
The system reads the barcode, decodes it, and then displays it as plain text in the surveillance image on the display of the relevant camera. From a purely technical standpoint, it’s possible to store additional information in the barcode. For example, you can store additional information about the relevant language version or sheet order.
