Technological innovations in printing and print finishing

The DRUPA trade fair in May 2024 impressively demonstrated how new technologies are transforming the industry. We provide an overview of current developments – with a focus on our partner Smyth.

Two enduring trends: Web-to-roll digital printing and the integration of machines into production lines

Looking at printing presses, the trend toward web-to-roll digital printing remains strong. Machines from HP, Canon, and Kodak are being used in an increasing number of areas within the printing industry, such as book and calendar production. Their use is still primarily economically viable for small and medium print runs.

In book production and post-press, the integration of machines into production lines is gaining further importance. For example, Smyth’s DX-80 thread sewing machine can be combined with a cover gluing machine, a Horizon BQ-500 perfect binder, and the HT-300 three-knife trimmer, all from the same manufacturer. The combination of the Smyth DX-80 Plus with the Canon Titan 6330 digital printing press also promises excellent results.

Below, we present the latest models from our partner Smyth. Many proven machines have been equipped with new functionalities and adapted to changing needs – for greater production flexibility and improved user-friendliness. For example, all the machines mentioned here are now equipped with a touchpad.

DX-80 Plus – Industrial Thread Sewing in Sheet-Fed or Roll-to-Roll Digital Printing

The DX-80 Plus, mentioned above, is a state-of-the-art folding and thread sewing machine for industrial thread sewing in sheet-fed or roll-to-roll digital printing. In addition to its short setup time, this model particularly shines with its high feeder speed of up to 200 m/min – perfect for sequential processing in digital printing. The new integrated creasing/folding system, the option to process formats up to 500 x 700 mm, and the possibility of direct connection to (sheet-fed) digital printing presses are further compelling reasons to expand your machinery with the new DX-80 Plus.

FF-380 4D – Industrial Thread Sewing on a New Level

Another example of technological innovation at Smyth Machines is the FF-380 4D, a thread sewing machine for the industrial thread sewing of brochures and books in offset printing. Of particular relevance to you as a customer is the new model’s reduced stitch length of 18 mm for increased durability and more stitches per sheet. The above-average performance of up to 180 stitching cycles per minute and the 4D feeder with its exceptionally smooth operation and sheet guide elements guarantee maximum productivity. Furthermore, the machine impresses with a range of modules and extensions, such as for colored thread or open thread sewing.

DX-E – Your Entry into Industrial Thread Sewing in Digital Printing

The DX-E is the perfect entry-level model for anyone increasingly producing small and medium print runs using digital printing. Like the DX-80 Plus, users benefit from very short setup times for quick job changes. The feeder has a capacity of up to 200 m/min and a maximum format of 390 x 500 mm.
