A second life for used machinery

Sustainability and resource conservation are becoming increasingly important in print finishing. At PPL, we focus on concrete solutions and measures with demonstrable results that also pay off economically. These include refurbishing used machines, installing our camera system, and repairing spare parts.

"It's still good!": Convincing arguments for buying used machinery

Refurbishing used machinery is a good example of a circular economy in practice and makes a significant contribution to avoiding unnecessary waste. Furthermore, it reduces a company’s carbon footprint, as the production of new machinery involves high resource consumption.

In the rarest of cases are older post-press machines truly “broken down.” Rather, after replacing worn parts and undergoing a complete overhaul, they are often just as efficient as new machines – even though manufacturers frequently claim otherwise. We also acquire many used machines in good condition. Their previous owners didn’t dispose of them because they were dissatisfied with their performance – but usually due to business closure or a realignment of their value chain.

However, these are far from the only arguments in favor of buying used machines:

  • Cost savings: Used machines are significantly cheaper than new ones. This allows even small and medium-sized enterprises to expand their production capacities and extend their production lines with manageable investments.
  • Benefit from excellent service: With PPL as your partner, you experience no disadvantages compared to buying a new machine when it comes to services such as maintenance and repairs.
  • Continue operating established systems: Nothing beats a proven production line where all components work together perfectly. Integrating a new model can bring surprises and may require longer start-up times and optimizations. When you buy a used machine of the same type, you know exactly what works and what doesn’t.

The example of the Janetschek printing company in Austria, where we installed and commissioned a redesigned saddle stitcher, illustrates how such a project works.

Conserve resources with the PPL camera system

In addition to purchasing used machinery, installing our camera system for perfect binders and saddle stitchers also makes a significant contribution to sustainability. Precise monitoring of the sheet sequence ensures a significant reduction in rejects and complaint rates. Material consumption and costs can also be optimized in this way.

Spare parts repairs: From old to new

Instead of unnecessarily replacing defective parts, repairs are the preferred option – for both cost and sustainability reasons. They significantly extend the lifespan of machines and reduce the need for new parts – which in turn conserves resources. At PPL, you benefit from years and decades of expertise in repairing machines from brands such as Müller-Martini, Heidelberg, Smyth, and Hohner. We are also your contact if you require new parts. We maintain one of the largest spare parts warehouses for print finishing machines in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). Since 2024, we have also operated an online shop for spare parts: https://shop.postprintleipzig.com/
